‘Whatever the future’ – Lingard leaves door to West Ham open as he returns to Manchester United
The England international thanked the Hammers for giving him back to his ‘real me’, but now he has to return to Old Trafford
Jesse Lingard has bid farewell to West Ham as he prepares to return to Manchester United, but the door is left open for a permanent move this summer.
After finding playtime hard to find at Old Trafford, Lingard traded northwest for east London during the winter window of 2021.
Lingard rediscovered his spark with the Hammers, scoring nine goals and deserving a call back from England, but for now his adventure in the capital is over as parent and loan clubs consider big calls.
What was said?
Lingard posted an emotional post for the Hammers on Instagram, saying, “What a way to end the season.
“Reaching our goal with this amazing group of guys is amazing! We pushed hard and never gave up! I feel so lucky to have been able to step into such a welcoming environment, everyone connected with the club has me showed how special this club is.
“So thank you to the gaffer who was convinced to bring me here. Thank you to all the staff who made it so easy for me to settle in and integrate me so quickly into the club. Thank you to the coaches who helped me. helped find my real back in the field.
“Thank you to the fans who supported me from the moment I arrived, it was amazing to be able to play in front of you on the last day!
“Thanks to a special group of guys, as well as making new lifelong friends, training and playing with all of you has been one of the highlights of my career!
“Whatever the future, West Ham United will hold a special place in my heart!”
The big picture
Lingard had only made three national cup outings for United before being released by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He has made 16 Premier League appearances for West Ham, with four assists recorded alongside his nine goals.
A place in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary squad for this summer’s European Championship has been secured. Once the international duties are completed, Lingard can return to club business.
David Moyes has made no secret of the fact that he would like Lingard to return for 2021-22, with the Hammers adding Europa League football to their schedule.
It remains to be seen, however, what the Red Devils have in store for their academy graduate, with the possibility of them sanctioning a sale.
