Types of alcohol you should know

You should be aware of the many types of alcohol available, whether you’re prolonging drinks at your home bar or trying distilled spirits for the first time. Knowing the different alcoholic beverages prepares the groundwork for moving on to cocktails and mixes and helps determine the ideal way to consume each spirit, alone or as a drink. But what exactly is alcohol?

Alcohol is a fundamental component of many cocktails and is added to virtually all mixed drinks. There are many varieties of liqueurs made from a wide range of ingredients, giving them rich flavors and distinctive applications.

There are many flavors and varieties of alcohol. In most cases, alcohol is created by distilling substances that have been fermented. Alcohol is produced by fermenting sugars into alcohol, which is then concentrated by distilling excess water. The color and flavor of alcohol can change over time as it ages in wooden barrels, but not all spirits go through this process.


Whiskey is a complex category of alcoholic beverages that includes several different spirits. Whiskey is a general term that includes scotch, bourbon and whiskey. Part of what defines the different names is the location of the spirit’s creation. While bourbon is produced in America, scotch and whiskey originated in Scotland. The naming process is also influenced by ingredients and other restrictions.


Cognac is a similar liquor that belongs to the same category as whiskey and brandy. However, brandy is not created from grains like other hard liquors; instead, it is made from fermented fruits. The following fruits are commonly seen in brandy:

5. Peaches


Vodka, unlike brandy, generally does not age and its color remains clear. Vodkas have an alcohol content of forty to fifty percent. Vodka, one of the most widely used varieties of hard liquor on today’s market, is perhaps a crucial part of virtually every beverage. Vodka has a neutral flavor, which makes it suitable for a variety of pairings, from the simplest to the most complicated, with a single component to several different liquors. While vodka comes in several flavors, the regular version is used in these mixed cocktails with additional flavorings.



Rum production does not include grain fermentation, unlike brandy and other alcoholic beverages. Rum is made from the fermentation of sugar cane or molasses. There are many versions of the sweeter spirit, including:

4. Gold

5. Spicy

7. Flavored


Gin is made from neutral grains such as rye, barley, wheat and corn and is unaged, making it transparent like vodka. The gin is made with botanical components like juniper berries, which give it a herbal and piney aroma. Gin goes well with unsweetened cocktails due to its dry or unsweetened flavor.


Tequila, another liquor produced from a substance other than grain, is prepared from the heart of the agave plant after being cooked and pressed by distilleries. Tequila has a wide range of flavors depending on its aging, just like other spirits.
