Thiruvananthapuram: The National Family Health Survey revealed some interesting trends regarding alcohol consumption in Kerala, which has proven to be the leader among other Indian states on this aspect.
The survey indicates that 18.7 percent of men in rural areas and 21 percent of men in towns drink alcohol in Kerala.
While the national average for male alcohol users over the age of 15 is 18.8 percent, in Kerala it is 19.9 percent.
Alcohol consumption in Alappuzha district is slightly higher than in 13 other districts of the state. The average number of alcohol users relative to the population is highest in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. Data reveals that among men, 29% consume alcohol in Alappuzha.
According to the sales records of Kerala Beverages Corporation (BEVCO), the most favorite drink of drinkers in Alappuzha is rum. According to the sales report for the last month, Alappuzha dumpsters consumed 90,684 cases of rum. All put together, including beer and other brands, a total of 1.4 lakh cases were sold.
Only 0.2 percent of women in Alappuzha drink alcohol.
Choice of Kottayam
Kottayam district is just behind in terms of total alcohol consumption, with male alcohol users at 27.4 percent. Only 0.6 percent of women in Kottayam district drink alcohol.
Brandy is the type of liquor most sought after by men in Kottayam District, followed by rum.
Thrissur not far behind
The third place of alcohol consumption goes to the district of Thrissur. Here, 26.2% of men and only 0.2% of women consume alcohol. The people of Thrissur love brandy and don’t have much of a connection to rum.
Malappuram district has the lowest alcohol consumption figures. Here, only 7.7% of men consume alcohol. The favorite brand of the few drinkers here is brandy.
The alcohol consumption habit among women is over 1.2 percent in Wayanad district.
Drinkers of Ernakulam, Idukki, Kannur, Kasargod, Palakkad, and Wayanad District love cognac. Kollam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta, and Thiruvananthapuram have a weakness for rum.
