Alcohol formula

Bottas on booze to clear your head: ‘Sometimes worked, sometimes didn’t’

Valtteri Bottas has raced for Mercedes for the past five seasons but has never seriously competed for the world title. However, the Finnish driver says he was under enormous pressure. To escape it, he takes refuge by going to the sauna. Drinking alcohol also helped Bottas clear his head.

In the Finnish podcast of supla Bottas says: “The sauna is a sacred place for me. And yes, sometimes we use alcohol. Not so much to get rid of the pressure, but to clear our heads and relax for the next race weekend. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.” .” In 2019 and 2020, Bottas had his best years in the service of Mercedes. During these seasons, he finished second in the world championship.

More relaxed bottas

Bottas is under no illusions that he can become Formula 1 world champion now that his contract with Mercedes has not been renewed and he has moved to Alfa Romeo Racing. However, the 32-year-old driver expects to face a season that will be much calmer. “I can say I’ve laughed a lot more since signing with Alfa,” he said.

Where Bottas was to play second fiddle to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, he now finds himself in an environment where he will have to lead his team. Alfa Romeo has had difficult years in the premier category of motor racing and is counting on the experience of the Finn. Moreover, Bottas has in Guanyu Zhou a rookie as a teammate who will have to learn a lot.
