Asda Blue Light discount: Fuel, alcohol and other exemptions not included

This week it was announced that Asda will reinstate its discount for Blue Light Card holders, giving money to those working in the NHS, emergency services, social services, social care sector and the armed forces.

Cardholders will be able to receive 10% off select products and services, including food and soft drinks, George clothing and household goods, toys, gifts and optical services, at all Asda stores in the Kingdom United when they present their Blue Light card to check. The supermarket has also scrapped its 12-week qualifying period for staff reductions in stores and online until October 2022, so new hires can save 10% on purchases from their first day of employment.

But, while this is good news for Blue Light Card holders, there are still restrictions on using their discount, as some items are not included. For starters, the high fuel prices we are currently seeing across the country will no longer be manageable by a Blue Light rebate.

Here are the rules and exemptions regarding when, where and what you can use your discount on – all information below is correct at the time of writing:

Where you cannot use your Blue Light Card discount

You can get 10% off (most of) your in-store grocery, clothing and housewares, but what’s not included? Well, your discount isn’t valid at an Asda gas station, Asda On The Move, or Asda cafes, to begin with. This list of items/services can be handy – where you can’t use your Blue Light Card discount and on which items:

  • George.com
  • Asda online grocery store (so you won’t be withdrawing this money from your online store)
  • Asda Tires
  • Fuel
  • Any alcohol
  • the tobacco
  • Lottery products
  • Gift vouchers and cards
  • Infant milk/formula
  • Cash back
  • Fireworks
  • Online games and instant tickets
  • Photo printing
  • Saver Stamps
  • postage stamp
  • “Rechargeable” mobile phone cards
  • All other financial and insurance services
  • Pharmacy and separate concessions

Can it be used for previous purchases, or in conjunction with other discounts?

The discount cannot be claimed retrospectively, so it’s worth making sure you have it with you whenever you shop. It also cannot be used with an Asda Colleague discount card or Asda Friends & Family discount.

It also cannot be used with Asda Reward offers.

Can someone else use my card?

The Blue Light Card member must be present in person during the transaction to claim the discount. It cannot be passed on to a friend or family member or anyone else.

Blue Light Card holders will also need to provide identification which will be verified at checkout (e.g. credit card, driving license or passport) to validate that they are the Blue Light Card holder.
